photo4me ![]() The Hospitium in the wonderful Museum gardens in the City of York. The lower storey of the building was most likely built from stone to withstand the regular floods. Stone would also have given an extra degree of
security. It was thought to have been used as a lodgings for visitors to the nearby St Marys Abby. Today the building is available for corporate or public events.

![]() The historic Lendal tower and Lendal bridge in the city of York in the county of Yorkshire, England. Lendal Tower has stood next to the River Ouse since about 1300.
It was originally part of the Citys defences. In medieval times a great iron chain which was stored in the tower was pulled across the river to Barker Tower on the opposite bank.

![]() The Hospitium can be found in museum gardens in the City of York, in the county of Yorkshire, England. it was one of the now ruined Saint Marys abby support buildings.
Its not known for sure what it was originally used for, the official listing of the building suggests that it was a place for visitors to stay. There was a gate onto the river right next to the Hospitium so it would have been well placed to serve guests arriving by boat.
Being next to the river it might also have been a warehouse.

Kings Staith in the City of York, Yorkshire,England. Just to the left of centre is Kings arms pub. (The pub that floods) Just to the right of centre is Cumberland house. In 1710, William Cornwell, a tanner and a brewer, built Cumberland House as his home. He was to become Lord Mayor of the City in 1712 and again in 1725.
